Helping students achieve their potential

February 4th, 2010

Cork Institute of Technology (CIT), formerly the Regional Technical College, Cork, was opened in 1973 and currently has in the region of 12,000 registered students with approximately 2,000 new entries year on year and 1,237 academic staff.  The Institute boasts many top class facilities including its award-winning Library & IT Building and was named as the Institute of Technology of the Year 2006 in The Sunday Times University Guide for Ireland.

Carmel Hennessy is employed as the Assistive Technology Outreach Co-ordinator at the CIT and works with teachers, special needs assistants, parents and students; training them in Assistive Technologies, in the hope that this will improve students’ chances in going on to third level/further education.

Carmel said “The Institute purchased Read&Write GOLD to help students with dyslexia achieve their potential”.

Read&Write GOLD is an award-winning literacy support tool designed by Texthelp to help users of all ages who require extra assistance when reading or composing text.  The software works discreetly with all mainstream Windows applications, which offers users with literacy difficulties the opportunity to work in an inclusive manner alongside their peers and colleagues.  Read&Write GOLD is particularly useful for those with learning difficulties, dyslexia or where English is a second language.

Carmel states “We use the software for scanning, making audio files, proofreading, highlighting and extracting text, summarising, as well as spell checking.

I feel students’ confidence increases through using Read&Write GOLD.  They can comprehend course material more quickly once it is read to them by the software, as well as having their reading skills and word recognition reinforced”.

Texthelp extended home access assistive technology

February 2nd, 2010

At The Education Show 2010, Texthelp Systems (stand F68) is showcasing Schools Access Software Suite; a specially developed assistive technology package designed to provide continuity of support and access for learning for students. Already supporting over 270,000 students with special educational needs (SEN) through the Government’s Home Access scheme, Texthelp is now extending this provision to schools and local authorities to help all students become motivated, independent learners. The bundle includes Texthelp’s award-winning Read&Write GOLD for Schools software, MindView mind-mapping and iZoom screen magnification tools.

Visitors to the show can also check out Texthelp’s (www.texthelp.com) Fluency Tutor tool; new online software to improve oral reading skills in early learners, and the latest version of Read&Write GOLD for Schools.

Designed to help increase engagement and self-sufficiency for learning, Schools Access Software Suite will help SEN learners to develop their creativity and achieve their full potential both inside and outside of the classroom. A major element of the package; Texthelp’s Read&Write GOLD for Schools software, has been designed specifically to address the needs of students with reading and writing difficulties. The software works discreetly in the background on all mainstream Windows applications to assist pupils with their reading, writing and research.

Read&Write GOLD for Schools’ text-to-speech functionality improves comprehension levels and access to the curriculum for students and contains features such as spelling support, a talking dictionary, word prediction, study skills, a translator tool and a fact-mapper that enables users to produce a visual representation of ideas. It encourages independent and inclusive learning while helping all pupils achieve greater access to the curriculum and improves access to Virtual Learning Environments (VLEs) and Digital Exams.

MindView is a visual study aid tool based on mind-mapping theory that assists students with the research, organisation and planning of projects across the curriculum. MindView’s different layouts allow students of all levels to personalise how they structure information to enhance creativity, clarify thinking and improve memory. The tool’s strong integration with MS Office means that mind maps can be converted to an outline in Word or a PowerPoint presentation with a simple mouse click.

iZoom is an easy-to-use screen magnification and reading package integrated into a single application. Students with a visual impairment can use the tool to enlarge and enhance the appearance of the computer screen to read emails, web pages, word documents, course materials, exams and more.

Texthelp will also be showcasing the new Fluency Tutor tool, the latest online software to improve oral reading skills in early learners. Children as young as five years old can log-on to Fluency Tutor at school or at home and practise their reading. The tool enables learners to listen to passages being read aloud before they record themselves reading and submit assessments to their teacher for marking. Feedback is provided to the pupil through a series of easy to understand graphical displays.

Fluency Tutor also benefits teachers through the provision of an innovative method of developing and assessing the oral reading fluency levels of their class. The software allows teachers to select the right text difficulty level of exercises for each pupil and to monitor a reading running record of their progress. Teachers can evaluate the fluency errors made, words correct per minute score and level of prosody (expression of reading) for every pupil.

Fluency Tutor delivers significant fluency gains for students and also facilitates the provision of targeted individualised instruction. The software has been designed to be fun to use and will provide motivation to improve oral reading skills.

Schools’ spending declines

March 30th, 2009

poundsterling_1150_18843981_0_0_1298_300School suppliers are in for a tough time ahead as school’s being to reconsider what they are spending, more so than ever before.

In a recent survey carried out by educational resource website Schoolzone, 90% of respondents claimed that the current economic climate was having an effect on their spending decisions.

So what does this mean…?
Well firstly, it means school’s are going to be focussing their spending on ‘core’ or essential expenditure first. This includes things like utilities, maintenance and other essential services.

Where schools will be cutting back is on ‘additional’ curriculum resources, ‘nice to haves’ and non-essential software/products/services.  This doesn’t mean to say that any supplier that is selling non-essential items will go bust, it simply means that school suppliers are going to have to work even harder to convince budget holders that what they are selling is good value for money and worthwhile.

However, it’s not all doom and gloom. Whilst schools main purse strings may be being tightened, they are also allocated a significant amount of funding that is ring-fenced, meaning it has to be spent in specific areas. These areas could include ICT, kitchens, playgrounds, outdoor classrooms & SEN to name a few. In these cases, although schools are still going to be careful as to where they spend their money, they do actually HAVE to spend it.

The test for school suppliers will be to see whether they can adapt to the market, reduce costs and find new and initiative ways to promote their products. Embracing social media is one option which some school suppliers, notably ICT suppliers, are doing particularly well not only to gain branding awareness but to get feedback and responses from end users – teachers and school staff, and best of all it’s FREE – all it costs is time.

So with school’s being more careful as to where and what they spend their money on – it’s becoming quite clear that the market isn’t recession proof at all – as it was once thought.

Education Show just over a week away…

March 16th, 2009

head_logo_edshow09With the start of this year’s Education Show just over a week away, what can school suppliers & teachers/school staff look forward to as they flock to the NEC next week?

‘The Big Bang’ feature is certainly going to be a highlight of the show, which has been put on in conjunction with the Science Association, and is designed to make science ‘fashionable’ once again for both teachers and pupils. Hopefully ‘The Big Bang’ will create a real buzz in the exhibition giving school suppliers lots of happy potential customers to talk to.

The show is expected to pull in the region of 15,000 visitors through it’s doors during its 3 day run, and has over 600 exhibitors in attendance.

Interestingly the organisers claim that on average each visitor has £3,988 to spend, accumulating to over £59m, which on the face of it is fantastic news for school suppliers that are showcasing their products and services.

What will be interesting to see is whether the show can still pull the same visitor numbers as it has in previous years, and whether schools are still in a position to spend the same sort of sums they have in the past. With many trade events this year having drops of between 15-25% in visitor numbers, the real test will be whether the guys at Emap have done enough to persuade people to make the trip to The Education Show.

Pearson set to take a steak in Espresso

February 26th, 2009

The educational publisher Pearson is rumoured to be the favourite to take a steak in online multimedia curriculum service provider Espresso following an article in the Independent on Sunday.

PricewaterhouseCoopers, who have been tasked with finding potential investors for Expresso have been in contact with a number of interested parties, but Pearson, owner of Penguin books and The FT have emerged as hot favourite, in a bid to strengthen their publishing arm and move further into multimedia delivery.

Espresso is looking for additional cash to fund international growth of their core multimedia service. Chief executive Lewis Bronze, company co-founder, is positive about the move:

This is a highly positive development in the company’s evolution and I am fully committed to driving it forward, and key to that is getting the right partner. We have a unique service and we want to take the company to more places around the world.

Despite the fact that Espresso is already moving into international markets, the company feels it needs the ability to grow rapidly to take advantage of opportunities while they are available. With many international Government’s now cottoning onto digital cirricilum delivery, Espresso feels it needs to move fast to secure strong market positions that mirror its standing in the UK education industry.
